Scaling and root planing is typically recommended when gum disease has progressed beyond the initial stage (gingivitis) to a more advanced stage (periodontitis). The procedure involves two main steps: scaling, which removes tartar and bacteria from the tooth surfaces and beneath the gum line, and root planing, which smoothes the root surfaces to promote reattachment of healthy gum tissue to the teeth.
Local antibiotic therapy is an additional treatment that can be done after scaling and root planing, designed to enhance the effectiveness of the deep cleaning procedure in treating gum disease. The antibiotic, typically in the form of a gelatinous powder, is placed directly into the periodontal pockets (spaces between the tooth and gum) to target the specific areas affected by harmful bacteria.
Periodontal maintenance is an ongoing care program designed for patients who have undergone treatment for gum disease, such as scaling and root planing. These regular visits are essential to monitor the health of your gums, teeth, and bones, and to prevent the progression or recurrence of periodontal disease. During these appointments, we will thoroughly clean your teeth, remove any plaque and tartar buildup, and assess the overall health of your gums.
