During your routine dental exam, our dentist will visually inspect your teeth, gums, tongue, and other oral tissues for any abnormalities or signs of disease. We may also take x-rays to check for cavities between teeth or issues below the gum line. Your dental hygienist will then perform a professional cleaning, using special tools to remove plaque and tartar that can't be eliminated with regular brushing and flossing. Finally, we'll polish your teeth for a smooth, gleaming finish.
A dental sealant is a preventive treatment that helps protect the chewing surfaces of your back teeth (molars and premolars) from tooth decay. These surfaces have deep pits and grooves that can be difficult to keep clean, making them more susceptible to cavities. The sealant material is a thin, plastic coating that is painted onto the tooth surface, filling in those grooves to create a smooth surface that is easier to clean and more resistant to decay. Sealants act as a barrier, preventing food particles and cavity-causing bacteria from collecting in the tiny crevices of your teeth.
Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a clear liquid used to halt cavity progression and reduce tooth sensitivity without removing tooth structure. Silver particles kill cavity-causing bacteria, while fluoride remineralizes and strengthens the tooth. SDF stops decay but doesn't restore lost tooth structure, so a filling may still be needed for shape and function.
An oral cancer screening is a quick, non-invasive exam to identify signs of cancer or precancerous conditions in the mouth early for a greater chance of cure. The dentist examines the lips, tongue, gums, cheeks, roof and floor of the mouth, and throat for suspicious areas like white or red patches, sores, lumps, rough or numb areas, and difficulty chewing or swallowing. A Velscope device is used, emitting a safe blue light causing healthy tissue to glow while abnormal tissue appears dark, helping spot potential issues not visible to the naked eye.
Fluoride varnish is a dental treatment that helps prevent, slow down, or stop tooth decay. It's a highly concentrated form of fluoride applied directly to teeth with a small brush. The sticky varnish adheres to teeth longer than other fluoride treatments, allowing it to remineralize weak areas and prevent cavities. It's often recommended for children and adults with risk factors like dry mouth, gum recession, frequent cavities, orthodontic appliances, dental bridges, or eating disorders.
